1. Why this page exists
This page describes NYVELLE's support-card response and links to crisis resources staffed by people.
2. How the app responds
This is the same protocol the app follows, published here so it can be checked.
- Detection. Every message you send is checked for signs of suicidal thoughts, self-harm, harm to others, or an eating disorder (first-person statements only). Clear fiction, games, jokes and negations are filtered out.
- Support card. When it matches, the app shows a support card with the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (call, text or chat at 988lifeline.org), the Crisis Text Line (text HOME to 741741), findahelpline.com outside the US, and your local emergency number (911 in the US) for immediate danger. For eating-disorder signals the card also lists free peer support from ANAD (anad.org).
- You can keep chatting. The card does not block the chat. Its Close button unlocks after a few seconds.
- Care instruction. For that reply, the character is instructed to step out of the story, respond with care and point to the resources above.
- Escalation. If a second message in the same session is flagged within 6 hours, the instruction is stronger, the card stays visible longer and a "Get support" link stays pinned in the chat.
- Always available. A link to these resources is in Settings → Safety at any time.
- What we record. Monthly counts by category only (suicide or self-harm, harm to others, eating disorders). No message text or character is stored with them. While you have an account, your own counts are kept with it so you can see them in Settings → Safety; when the account is deleted they become part of monthly totals with no account attached. We use the totals for the yearly report that California law requires operators to send to the state Office of Suicide Prevention (from July 2027).
3. What the app cannot do
Characters are fiction. They cannot assess risk, call for help, or notice what a person would notice. If you are worried about yourself or someone else, talk to a person: a friend, a doctor, or one of the lines above.
4. Reporting a problem with this protocol
If a character responded badly to a crisis, tell us: support@nyvelle.app with the approximate time. We read every report and adjust the app's safety instructions and filters as needed.
5. Review
This protocol is reviewed at least yearly and after any reported failure.
